The death toll from joint airstrikes carried out by the United States and Saudi Arabia in Iraq has risen to 20, with 32 others injured.

The strikes, conducted on Wednesday, targeted infrastructure belonging to Iraq's paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF).

In a statement, the PMF said facilities in Baghdad, Wasit, Karbala, and several other areas were hit, causing extensive damage, including to multiple military headquarters.

Following the attacks, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih Al-Zaidi convened an emergency meeting.

The U.S. Central Command stated that the strikes were carried out in response to attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure allegedly launched from Iraq under the direction of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Saudi Arabia also acknowledged the operation, saying it does not seek further escalation but remains prepared to respond if necessary.
