A 22-day ban on catching, selling, and transporting all fish, including hilsha, will take effect from Saturday midnight. The ban will be in effect in all the rivers and seas of the country from October 12 midnight on Saturday till November 3.
At this time, nationwide hilsa transportation, buying and selling, storage and exchange will be prohibited and mother hilsa conservation campaign will be implemented.
The ban will cover a 70 kilometer area from Matlab north of Chandpur to Haimchar, during which time no fisherman will be allowed to enter the river.
At least 43,000 fishermen will be unemployed during the ban. This 22-day annual ban has been in place for several years to protect ilish during its critical breeding period.
