Experts have warned that a massive earthquake, possibly up to magnitude 9, could occur anywhere between Sylhet and Chattogram.
A large amount of tectonic energy is trapped only 5–25 km beneath the surface along the fault formed by the Indian and Burmese plates, which continue to push toward each other, each year.
Four quakes in 31 hours suggest rising pressure in this zone. Scientists said that, the region is currently within the 1,000–1,500-year cycle when major earthquakes typically happen.
They caution that, the risk will persist until a major quake releases the accumulated energy.
