Law experts have expressed concern that the verdict in the Ramisa rape and murder case may not be implemented quickly despite the unusually fast trial court ruling. They say, a severe backlog of cases and a shortage of judges in the High Court may be delayed the final disposal of many important cases.
However, Child victim Ramisa was raped and murdered in Dhaka's Pallabi area. The case drew nationwide outrage.
Although the lower court delivered its verdict in record time, lawyers fear the appeal process in the higher courts could significantly delay justice.
A similar situation exists in the murder case of school girl Acchia in Magura. Last year, the third-grade student was raped and killed. After a rapid investigation and trial, the main accused, Hitu Sheikh, was sentenced to death.
However, the verdict has yet to be executed as the case remains under review in the High Court.
