Despite the end of the fishing ban, fishermen are still not getting the expected amount of hilsa from the Padma and Meghna rivers in Chandpur.
As a result, many are returning from the rivers disappointed.
At Chandpur hilsa supply remains far below demand.
Most fishermen are returning empty-handed from the rivers and say recovering operational costs has become extremely difficult.
The shortage of hilsa has also pushed up prices sharply.
1-KG of Hilsa is being sold for around 3 thousand and 500 taka, while hilsa weighing between 700 and 900 grams is selling for 2 thousand 500 to 2 thousand 700 taka.
Half-kilogram hilsa is being sold for 1 thousand 700 to 1 thousand 800 taka, placing the popular fish, beyond reach, for many lower and middle-income consumers.
