Former Army Chief Maj Gen (retd) KM Shafiullah Bir Uttam, one of the sector commanders during the Liberation War in 1971, has passed away.
The freedom fighter breathed his last around 8 am on Sunday at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka. Valiant freedom fighter Shafiullah was admitted to the hospital on 10 June.
He has been suffering from various ailments, including diabetes, hypertension, fatty liver, and dementia.
Shafiullah was the second in command of the 2nd East Bengal Regiment stationed in Joydevpur in 1971.
He was the first Bengali officer to lead his battalion to rebellion.
