Agricultural growth in Bangladesh has fallen to its lowest level in 54 years, placing the country on the World Bank’s warning list. Economists and agricultural experts are urging the government to allocate at least 10 percent of the national budget to agriculture to prevent future food shortages amid global instability.
Although the national budget has expanded significantly over the past 15 years, agricultural allocations have not increased proportionately.
In the current fiscal year, agriculture received 27 thousand 224 crore taka from the Tk 7 lakh 90 thousand crore Taka's national budget.
Of that amount, 17 thousand and 241 crore taka has been allocated for subsidies related to electricity, fuel, and fertilizers. Experts warn that climate change is increasing risks in the agricultural sector, yet funding for adaptation and productivity support remains insufficient.
