The World Champions Argentina took an early lead in Chile, with Julian Alvarez scoring in the 16th minute.

Despite creating more chances, they failed to extend the lead. 

Messi returned to international action after seven months, coming on as a substitute in the 57th minute, but made little impact. 

Late in the game, Giuliano Simeone missed an open net, and Argentina had to settle for a narrow 1-0 win.

Meanwhile, Brazil were held to a goalless draw against Ecuador on Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching debut. Brazil struggled to break down Ecuador’s organized defense. 

Vinicius Jr. had the best first-half chance, but his shot was saved. Brazil created more opportunities after the break, but Richarlison failed to capitalize on a perfect pass from Vinicius. 

The draw leaves Ecuador second in the table with 24 points, while Brazil, with 22, sits fourth and still faces a tough road ahead.
