Fishing has resumed across Bangladesh after a two-month nationwide ban aimed at protecting small-hilsa, known locally as Jatka.

From midnight, thousands of fishermen returned to the rivers, hopeful of rebuilding their livelihoods after weeks of enforced inactivity.

In Bhola, fishermen have begun casting their nets in the Meghna and Tetulia rivers.

Fish landing centres, silent for weeks, are once again bustling with traders, buyers and fishermen.

However, many say, the fishing so far has fallen short as per expectations, with fewer hilsa being caught and many of them smaller in size.

The activity has also resumed in the rivers of Chandpur, Lakshmipur and Patuakhali.

Fishermen say, if they can catch enough fish in the up-coming days, they will be able to repay their accumulated debts.
