Days of continuous rainfall have pushed up the price of green chillies in Hili, Dinajpur. The retail price has jumped by 120 taka, with consumers now paying as much as 280 taka per kilogram.
A visit to local markets shows supplies have fallen sharply. Only a handful of shops have green chillies in stock, forcing buyers to pay significantly higher prices.
Traders say persistent rainfall has damaged crops in farming areas, reducing supplies arriving at wholesale markets and driving up prices.
However, traders remain hopeful that prices will ease once imports of green chillies from India resume through the Hili Land Port.
They expect increased supplies to bring the commodity back within the reach of ordinary consumers.
