Heavy rains and widespread waterlogging across several districts have driven green chili prices to dramatic heights. Depending on the market, the essential kitchen staple is currently selling between Tk 320 and Tk 350 per kilogram, while the broader vegetable market remains equally volatile.
In Manikganj, continuous rainfall and severe waterlogging have devastated numerous chili fields.
According to the Department of Agricultural Extension, around 20 hectares of chili crops have been destroyed. Moreover, while plants remain standing in many fields, they are yielding little to no produce.
Consequently,green chilis are currently retailing at Tk 320 per kilogram in various local markets.
General consumers are struggling to cope with this sudden price jump, which extends to other produce as brinjal, sponge gourd, ash gourd, and nearly all vegetable varieties continue to climb in price.
