India's weather department has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, warning of extremely heavy rain and wind speeds of 50 to 60 kilometers per hour.
Due to the severe weather, schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar have been closed, while Mumbai University has postponed scheduled exams.
Police say most deaths were caused by falling trees, open manholes, and flooding.
