Indefinite strike halts operations at Chattogram port

Protesting workers have blocked the vehicle of Shipping Adviser Shakhawat Hossain after his port inspection, creating tension at Chattogram Port.

Law-enforcement agencies intervened and brought the situation under control.

 

 

Under strict security,the adviser and officials were taken back into the port building, where meetings were held to address the crisis . 

 

 

Workers have been on an indefinite strike for the 6th day,opposing the leasing of the New Mooring Container Terminal. 

 

 

The strike has severely disrupted port operations. Over 140 vessels are waiting at the outer anchorage, including more than 35 carrying essential goods. 

 

 

Each ship is facing daily demurrage charges of about 10,Thousand dollars. 

 

 

With many goods imported ahead of Ramadan, fears are growing of price hikes that could hit consumers.

 

 

 Activities at private off-docks outside the port have also suspended.
