Supreme Court lawyer Shishir Monir has sent a legal notice to the election commission and three ministries, urging them to ensure voting rights for migrant workers within a month.

Electoral reform advocates say the move is long overdue.

Migrant workers are the backbone of Bangladesh’s economy, contributing billions through remittances.

Yet, nearly 15 million Bangladeshi workers abroad are deprived from their voting rights.

Despite being key contributors to national development, they have no way to cast their vote.

In light of this, lawyer Shishir Monir has sent a legal notice to the Election Commission, the Ministry of Law, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare.

Badiul Alam Majumdar, head of the Electoral Reform Commission, emphasized that it's a constitutional right and that the Election Commission must act swiftly to include migrants in the democratic process.
