On this day in 1886, workers in Chicago’s Haymarket in US sacrificed their lives while demanding an eight-hour working day. Since then, the day has been observed worldwide with due respect.

In Bangladesh incuding its capital Dhaka 'May Day' is being marked through a range of programs. The day;s this year’s  theme is: “Healthy workers, skilled hands, a new dawn will come.” With the arrival of May Day, issues related to workers’ rights once again come into focus. 

Long-standing demands of workers include wage increases, determination of working hours, ensuring workplace safety, and the freedom to form trade unions.

Various organizations, including Karmojibi Nari, Biri Shramik Andolon, Bangladesh Shramik Federation, and trade unions, observe programs in front of  National Press Club in Dhaka.
