Mexico beat South Africa 2-0 in World Cup opener

Hosts Mexico begins their FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 victory over South Africa. The opening match also saw three players sent off, with South Africa receiving two red cards and Mexico one.

The hosts dominated from the start and took the lead in the 9th minute through Julian Quinones, who scored the first goal of the 2026 World Cup. 

 

 

South Africa created several chances before halftime but failed to equalize. 

 

 

The African side was reduced to ten men early in the second half after a red card, and Mexico doubled their lead in the 67th minute. 

 

 

South Africa later received a second red card in the 84th minute, while Mexico also had a player sent off in stoppage time. 

 

 

The score remained unchanged as Mexico secured a comfortable win.
