Printing of smart national identity cards has been stopped for a month due to outstanding balance of Tk 97 crore.

Meanwhile, by 2025, the EC will purchase three crore more smart national identity cards to hand over smart national identity cards to all the voters of the country.
In 2016, the Election Commission handed over smart national identity cards with electronic chips to the citizens. Since then, EC has printed 7 crore 35 lacs smart national identity cards.
Out of this, more than 5 crore 90 lakhs smart national identity cards have been delivered to citizens.
