Today marks the 10th of Muharram, a day of deep mourning and reflection for Muslims across Bangladesh and around the world.

Known as Ashura, the day commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was brutally killed along with his family and companions at Karbala in 680 AD.

Imam Hussain’s sacrifice is remembered as a timeless symbol of the fight for truth, justice, and resistance against oppression and tyranny.

The tragic events of Karbala continue to inspire people to stand up for what is right, regardless of the cost. In observance of Ashura, members of the Shia Muslim community in Dhaka brought out the traditional Tazia procession from the historic Hoseni Dalan Imam-bara in Old Dhaka.

Participants walked barefoot through the streets, beating their chests and chanting “Ya Hussain, Ya Hussain” in mourning.
