The price of onions has shot up sharply in Dhaka’s retail markets, rising by Tk 30 to Tk 40 per kilogram within a week, adding further pressure on daily consumers.
The sudden hike in onion prices has heated up Dhaka’s kitchen markets, with retail prices now ranging between Tk 110 and Tk 120 per kg—up from Tk 70 to Tk 80 just a week ago.
Traders say the surge is due to reduced supply, while the price of ginger has also increased by Tk 20 per kg, now selling at Tk 200.
However, consumers allege that the lack of strict government monitoring has allowed dishonest traders to exploit the situation.
Amid the rising costs of spices, vegetable prices have brought some relief, with most varieties being sold between Tk 50 and Tk 80 per kilogram.
