Former French midfielder Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of the Senegal national football team. The Senegalese Football Federation officially confirmed the appointment.
The 50-year-old Vieira was born in Senegal’s capital, Dakar.
A three-time Premier League winner with Arsenal and a 1998 World Cup winner with France, Vieira will take charge of a national team for the first time.
Pape Thiaw left his position as Senegal coach after the team were eliminated in the last 32 of the World Cup. Vieira will now succeed the former coach.
His first assignments will come in September, when Senegal face Mozambique, in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
