Power generation costs in the country have increased by 83 percent over the past four years. At the same time, dependence on imported fuel has risen by 15 percent.
These concerns highlighted in a report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis-IEEFA.
The report attributes the crisis to excessive reliance on oil-based power plants and the burden of capacity charges.
It noted that efforts to control spending in the power sector have been largely unsuccessful.
According to IEEFA research, the per-unit cost of electricity generation rose from Tk 6.61 in the 2020–21 fiscal year to Tk 12.10 in 2024–25.
Additionally, dependence on fuel imports increased from 47.7 percent to 62.5 percent.
