Earlier, the development comes amid ongoing speculation about his possible resignation. 

But, neither the President's Office nor the government were  issued any official statement on the matter. 

Mohammed Shahabuddin was elected unopposed as President in 2023 with the nomination of  Awami League and was sworn into office on April 24 of that year. 

Although the Awami League government was ousted during the July uprising in 2024, he remained in office as President.  

However, In an interview with Reuters on December 11, 2025, he had expressed his intention to step down after the parliamentary elections scheduled for February.
