Legal and constitutional experts say President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s voluntary resignation would be the best way to ensure a smooth transition to a new head of state. They believe stepping down on his own would help avoid political tension and possible impeachment in parliament.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin became the country’s 22nd president on April 24, 2023.
During his term, he administered the oath to outsed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina after the 12th national election, later swore in Chief Adviser Dr.
Muhammad Yunus following the Awami League government’s fall on August 5, 2024, and most recently administered the oath to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman after the 13th national election—making him the only president to swear in three different heads of government in one term.
Despite this, debate continues over his election by a controversial parliament and remarks seen as political.
