The force was established in 2004 during BNP government. 

Now, in 2026, the same government is changing the force’s name. 

Along with the name change, the government is also planning reforms to the force’s operations and legal framework. 

A former police chief has recommended effective implementation of the new law alongside the renaming to help restore public confidence. 

Security analysts, meanwhile, have stressed the need for strict accountability within the specialized force.
