Continuous rain and upstream water have flooded vast areas of haor farmland in Bangladesh.
In five districts, at least 42 000 hectares of Boro paddy have been damaged, leaving thousands of farmers facing heavy losses.
In Sunamganj, most of the rice fields in 137 small and large haors are now underwater.
According to Agricultural Department, rice worth about 200 crore taka has already been damaged.
In Kishoreganj, the water levels of the Dhanu, Bou-lai, Mogra, and Kalni rivers have risen. Nearly 7 thousand hectares of boro rice fields in the district are underwater.
In Netrokona, although the rain has stopped, river water continues to rise. New-- low-lying areas are being flooded. So far, only 21 percent of the district’s rice has been harvested.
At least 10 thousand hectares of farmland are now underwater.
In Habiganj, some ripe rice has gone underwater, while some harvested rice is being ruined because farmers cannot dry it properly.
