The Supreme Court has acquitted death row convict Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam from the charges of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
The Appellate Division of the SC scrapped its earlier judgment that upheld the conditional death sentence given by the International Crimes Tribunal to ATM Azharul Islam in this case.
The apex court also directed the jail authorities to release Azharul from jail immediately if he is not arrested in other case.
A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed passed the order.
On February 27, the SC allowed Azharul to move a fresh appeal before the court challenging his death penalty.
