Dhaka’s kitchen markets are witnessing a sharp spike in commodity prices, leaving consumers struggling to manage their household budgets.

In just one month, the price of aromatic "Polao" rice has jumped by 60 taka, now selling at a staggering 220 taka per kilogram.

Meanwhile, traders attribute a rise in flour prices to supply chain disruptions caused by energy shortages.

Beyond staples, the protein market remains volatile. While eggs are retailing at 140 taka per dozen, shoppers are increasingly opting for cheaper fish like Pangas as prices for Hilsa and Shrimp remain out of reach Discrepancies between wholesale and retail prices are also rampant; for instance, green chilies are being sold at double their wholesale rate.

Consumers are now calling for stricter market monitoring to curb the manipulative practices of middlemen.
