Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has returned home today, shortening his visit to Thailand amid growing concern over the possible resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
The Speaker arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 12:30 pm on a Thai Airways flight.
His return comes as reports suggest President Mohammed Shahabuddin has decided to step down and may submit his resignation to the Speaker soon.
Although the Constitution does not require the Speaker to be physically present in the country when the President resigns, the Speaker is consti-tutionally required to assume presidential responsibilities immediately after the office falls vacant.
