At Dambulla Bangladesh were put in to bat after losing the toss and faced early setbacks, losing two wickets for just 7 runs.
But skipper Liton Das silenced critics with a fluent 76-run innings, while Shamim contributed a quickfire 48 off 27 balls.
Bangladesh posted a competitive 177 for 7 in 20 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka collapsed under pressure, managing only 94 runs. Shariful Islam and Mohammad Saifuddin picked up two wickets each, while leg-spinner Rishad Hossain claimed three.
Only Pathum Nissanka and Dasun Shanaka crossed double figures as the Tigers dominated to level the series 1-1.
