Volker Turk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has arrived in Dhaka for a two-day visit.
Taufiq Hasan, Director-General and spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ UN division received him at the airport on early Tuesday.
During his visit, Turk will meet with Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, along with 6-7 other advisers, the Chief Justice, the Army Chief, representatives of anti-discrimination student movements and members of civil society. The discussions will prioritize issues related to elections, human rights, and security.
Meanwhile, the United States wants the people of Bangladesh to reap the benefits of basic freedoms including the freedom of speech. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said this in response to a journalist's question at a regular press conference on Monday local time.
He made the remark when he was asked to comment on implementation of the Anti-Terrorism Act against the AL's student wing, Chhatra League, after it was banned. Matthew Miller also reiterated US support towards Bangladesh's interim government.
