The ninth anniversary of the catastrophic Rana Plaza building collapse in Savar of Dhaka, the worst ever tragedy in the history of the country’s multi-billion dollar RMG industry, has been observed on Sunday.
On this fateful day in 2013, Rana Plaza, a nine-storey commercial building with several garment factories in it, collapsed, leaving 1,138 people dead and maiming numerous others, mostly garment workers.
On the occasion of the ninth anniversary of Rana Plaza disaster, labour rights organisations have chalked out many programmes. The scale of the disaster at the Rana Plaza garment factory nine years back created an expectation that there would be industry-wide change, but this has not materialised.
