The earthquake happened about 9:15 local time on Wednesday at Mansfield, not far from the Victorian state capital. Footage on social media showed damage to some buildings, but no injuries were immediately reported. The earthquake was also felt in neighbouring South Australia and New South Wales.

Scott Morrison, Australian Prime Minister, said, "From the way in from the airport we learned of the earthquake which has occurred in Mansfield in Victoria. Geoscience has provided us of a record of 6, with aftershocks of 5.5, 4 and 4. I've been in contact with Premier Andrews, as well as the Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister McKenzie and we'll continue to receive reports throughout the night."
